"There's a Tigress in our midst...."

Guest Speaker at September networking breakfast: Niromi de Soyza
Author of "Tamil Tigress: My Story as a Child Soldier"

Niromi de Soyza left her middle-class Sri Lankan family in 1987 at just 17, to join the Tamil Tigers. Equipped with a rifle and cyanide capsule she was one of the rebels' first female soldiers. Niromi's group managed to survive on their wits in the jungle, facing not only the perils of war but starvation, illness and growing internal tensions among the militant Tigers.

Now living in Sydney with her husband and two children, Niromi has an undergrad degree in Biotechnology and a Masters in Intellectual Property Law and works at a Sydney University. Niromi speaks fluent Tamil and Sinhalese and writes beautiful English.

How was it that this well-educated, mixed-race, middle-class girl from a respectable family came to be fighting with the Tamil Tigers? Niromi de Soyza speaks of her compelling story that became her book “Tamil Tigress: My Story as a Child Soldier in Sri Lanka’s Bloody Civil War”.

The highly anticipated 2011 Business Woman of the Year Awards were held at The Event Centre, Caloundra on Saturday, August 27 with the award for the Outstanding Business Woman of the Year going to Kim McCosker of 4 Ingredients Enterprises, which has the biggest selling self-published cookbooks in Australian publishing history.

Winners were also chosen across five categories namely Carolyn Thomson from Kadoe Commercial Coatings as the Professional Business Woman of the Year, Dena Dillon from Piper Digital Marketing as the Corporate Business Woman of the Year, Vickie Magic from Business Matters Magazine as the Micro/Small Business Woman of the Year, Julie Jacobson from Holmans Accounting & Financial Planning as the Young Business Woman of the Year and Jennifer Forster from Goal Power Training as the Sports Woman of the Year.

President of the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network, Sue Willis said that the awards have become recognised as the most prestigious for Sunshine Coast women and highly sought after with this year being no exception.

“Once again the judges were very impressed with the remarkable contribution by this year’s finalists which reflect the high calibre of business women on the Coast. Every finalist has an amazing story to share on their achievement, dedication and success which often makes deciding on the overall winner a difficult task,” said Sue.

“We look forward to working with these incredible women throughout the year so that they may inspire other women in our network and also within the greater community to appreciate their own business and personal potential.”

“We would like to thank our valuable sponsors for their involvement in this year’s awards and their continued support of the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network, namely Garland Waddington Solicitors, Telstra Business, The Events Centre Caloundra, University of the Sunshine Coast, Weekender and Advance Sports Sunshine Coast,” Sue said.

The gala dinner hosted by MCs John Williamson and Min Swan, saw more than 300 business leaders and professionals celebrate the 32 finalists and their achievements.

Business Articles
Is your attitude affecting your business?
By Melanie Jacobson

Many of the local business owners I have spoken with lately are feeling panicky over their business' future due to the state of the economy. Of course it is sensible to be aware of current financial issues that may affect us, but by taking a negative attitude we could do more harm to the future of our business if we allow these pessimistic views to take over our business mind.

By Carlee Driscoll

As some of you may know, Chilli has had a mini run on office babies with Baby Nelson and Baby Eastman both joining us this joyous year. Consequently, in the Chilli office we have some idea of parent’s difficulty in choosing a name for that darling bundle of delight that will be the perfect fit for Junior’s lifetime. If you think choosing a name for a baby is tough, think about choosing a name for a business! With all the rebranding work we do, we frequently have to help our expectant business owners come up with the name that fits the bill. It must:.....
